Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security Meeting Summary - Cyberspace

June 8-10, 2012, Niagara Falls, Ontario

Participants:  The Minister of Public Safety, Minister of Justice, Deputy Minister of Justice, as well as senior officials from Public Safety, Justice, National Defense, RCMP and CSIS participated in the dialogue with members.

Discussion: The meeting focused on various aspects of cyber security, including an academic introduction to cyberspace, monitoring analysis capabilities, social networking and community mobilization, threats facing Canada in the cyber world, and the use of cyberspace as a method for terrorism recruitment. Members were given an overview of Canadian cybercrime offenses, discussed the impact of new technologies on law enforcement activities, and reviewed the achievements and challenges facing Canada's Cyber Security Strategy. Members were also debriefed on the first round of funding awarded under the Kanishka Project and were consulted on research questions that will address countering terrorism in the Canadian context.

CCRS members recognized cyber security for businesses and individuals as one of the most important components to national security. Members underscored the importance of the government providing information to the general Canadian public and various ethnic media sources regarding the most useful security measures that might be adopted to protect personal and business computers.
